Winter 2011-12

February 26th: Today we focused on using the "Triple Threat" to get to the basket to score, to move into a pass and to get a shot off. We saw some players use this skill during Game-time, however we want to see more of you using these skills when playing. Our players of the day were Netanel Goldstein, David Greenstein, Layla Raza, Dan Sabbah and Ilan Shachver. We hope to see continued improvement next week. Keep up the good work!

February 19th: This session focused on introducing the "Triple Threat". Three moves can come from the "Triple Threat" position; Dribble, Pass, or Shoot. We hope to use variations of this in next weeks class. Our players of the day were Eythan Levi, Dylan Merovitz, Akiem Sergeant and Riva Schwartz. They continue to show improvement and surprisingly a sense of confidence in their game.

February 12th: On this session we focused on our controlled dribbling and on the "JHOOPS Deek" off of the "give-N-go". The tournaments were very exciting. All the coaches were very happy to see that their players were improving. Our players of the day were Dylan Lang, Dylan Merovitz, Yoni Drazin, Matthew Mann, Russell Leibovitch and Zackary Elfassy. Each one of them were impressive on their respective teams. Congratulations to Matthew Mann for being the first to win the award twice. Continue to work hard and we will see you all next week.

February 5th: This session was devoted to shooting and dribbling. During the shooting drills we learned how to get our feet set and our bodies ready in the shooting position before the pass is made and then releasing the shot off of the pass. This is called the "catch-N-shoot". We divided everyone into 5 teams with one Coach per team. The teams played a competitive tournament. Coaches would like to applaud team Terminators for their amazing passing display. Our players of the day were Matthew Mann, Eric Tanguay, Samuel Cohen, Kevisha Williams and Samantha Sholzberg. They were all leaders on their teams and we hope to see much more improvement from them as the weeks go by.

January 30th: Today we worked on dribbling and on the "give-N-go".
Coaches have noticed that the competition level has increased from last week to this week. Our players of the day were Matthew Mann, Gloria Dixon, and Sina Firoozy. They have all shown great leadership skills, the drive to improve and the passion for the game of basketball. We hope to see them continue along this path to success.

January 23rd: The JHOOPS Winter session started strong with close to 30 participants. We worked on our lay-ups and dribbling. During Game-time all the coaches noticed that there was a competitive atmosphere. As a result we found a lot of the games to be very close and exciting. Our player of the day went to Zackary Elfassy. He displayed great leadership and teamwork. We hope he continues to pass the ball and lead his team to victory every week.

Winter Camp 2011-12

Day 8: The last day of the JHOOPS Winter Camp has unfortunately arrived. On this day we played games, learned the three man weave, ate pizza, danced, watched Like Mike and handed out awards. Team Lava Beat Boxing Cats were JHOOPS second weeks champions. They racked up the most amount of points this week. Their names are now on the trophy. The week passed by "super duperly" fast! We hope you all had a great time and we wish to see you all again in the future. We would like to thank the coaching staff for their wonderful work with the players. They have nothing but the best to say about all the players. The pictures have been posted on the Photos page and soon we will have a video montage of the entire winter camp. Please check your emails for updates. Thank you all so very much for an amazing experience. Have fun in school!

During special we played king of the court and the objective was for the players to score at least one basket on a coach. Joshua managed to score on John and team Dominators were awarded 15,000 points. We went swimming and had a lot of fun competing in relay races. After all the games were played team Dominators accumulated the most points for the day and they now get the opportunity to either skip out of the morning laps or they can choose to have the boat for 10 minutes to themselves during pool time. So far, in first place we have team Lava Beat Boxing Cats with 53,000 points, in second place it's team Dominators with 47,500 points, in third place it's the All-Stars with 32,500 points and lastly in forth place we have JHOOPS Globetrotters with 31,000 points (they are obviously too busy trotting the globe to win many points!) During the drills we focused on our dribbling and on our lay-ups. The three teams have competed in game-time and Sharp Shooters won most of their games. The All-Star Dragons challenged the Head Coach, Kevin Fuks, and this meant that their coach would compete in a one on one with him. The game was really intense but someone had to win. Ron Sandroussy, the coach for All-Star Dragons, ended up winning this match which gave his team an extra 500,000 points. Team Sharp shooters challenged the Jokers and they had Joshua compete in a one on one vs Eric. The match up was a tough one but Joshua came out on top. This competition gave team Sharp Shooters 300,000 points as well as putting them in the lead. our Player of the day went to Eric. He displays passion on and off the court. His coach believes that he has a lot of potential and if he continues to practice hard like he is currently then he can become an All-Star player.

Day 2:
Day 2 was a very exciting day. During the fundamental drills we focused on our shooting and on our passing. We went to the pool and had a blast of a splash, literally! After lunch we focused on making the team banners. Everyone was hard at work since the winner of the best banner would win one million points. The winners were the Jokers who now have a total of 1,002,910 points putting them in first place. In second place we have the Sharp Shooters with 752,600 points and in third place the All-Star Dragons with  502,370 points. The player of the day was Joshua. The teams will be competing for the 1st weeks JHOOPS trophy. The team with the most points will receive prizes as well as their names on the trophy. Summer 2011

August 28th: This was our last session to complete the summer. We kept it fun by starting with a "Knock-out" tournament following by some dribbling drills and working on our lay ups. Game-time was in full effect with 2 teams competing, the "Shhh" and the "Golden Lakers". Our player of the day went to Sarah Amar from Maimonides. She displays a lot of passion for the game and a drive to get better. What is most impressive about Sarah is that she works very hard while always having a smile on her face. She will definitely become a great leader one day. We capped off our summer session by handing out Certificates of participation as well as Player of the day awards. This summer was a lot of fun. We hope to continue the fun with our Fall session.

Thank you all for a wonderful summer!

August 21st: On this session we had new players show up and prove that they are  Jhoops material. We focused on the shot pump fake and the sweep as well as our lay-ups. I have to say that all the players have been improving tremendously. The competition level during Game-Time has increased dramatically. The player of the day went to one of the new participants Nathaniel Assayag. He has a lot of talent and will one day be one of the top basketball players in Montreal. During Game-Time, we saw a lot of amazing shots. Shout-out to Jonah for his amazing shooting skills. Next week will be our last session and we will be taking pictures and handing out some prizes.

August 7th: This session was our biggest one so far. We spent time working on our Ball handling and on the fundamentals of making a Lay-Up. We had a few teams take part in Game-Time. The Coaches and the Players came up with some creative team names; Cherry Pickers, Pink Panthers, and Best Hoops Swishes. Our player of the day went to Chloe Elofer for her amazing display of hustle and determination to get the ball into her hands and in the basket. We see a lot of potential in her and we hope she continues to work hard. We also had our 2nd Basketball in the Pool day which saw parents of the participants showing off their skills. Good Job!

July 31st: This session was the perfect opportunity to take what we have learned over the  last few weeks and apply it in order to improve our overall game.  We had several new players join the program, as well as alumni players returning to the court after a well deserved vacation. Aside from focusing on on the fundamental skills developed in the past, we had the opportunity to explore a critical skill required of all great basketball players; layups! I am proud to say that every player has improved dramatically from when they first stepped on to the court. The player of the day went to Ezequiel Glujovsky. He played with a lot of determination, energy and improvement. He is a perfect example of how practice can make you better. The two teams that faced off were the "Blue Carrots" and the "Red Rabbits". Both teams utilized the skills learned over the last few weeks, and in addition demonstrated tremendous skills in both defence and fast breaks. In addition, Jhoops will be having their second Ball in the Pool day, so don't forget your bathing suits!

July 24th: This session turned out to be very exciting. We had a few new players added to the program andsome players returning from their family vacations. Todays session focused on dribbling and lay-ups. during Game-Time, the two teams were; the "pink carrots" and the "salad makers". salad makers proved to be very tough on the defensive end and the pink carrots showed very impressive offensive abilities. For the very first time at JHOOPS we had two players of the day; Joshua Virag (left) and Etan Krivorot (right). We had a hard time deciding who should receive the honors but since they both showed great passion and skill we had to give both of them respect. Etan displayed a lot of courage and joy for the game while Joshua showed some nice offensive abilities along with great passing skills. Also, this day was very special to the JHOOPS Director, Kevin Fuks, as it was the same day of his engagement party. Mazel Tov!

July 17th: The session began with a few participants away on vacation, however we stayed on track and went straight to work. This day focused on dribbling, passing, and shooting. Our player of the day went to Dan Sabbah from Maimonides. He displayed great passion for the game. After several times being told to sit down and relax he kept pushing and wanted to keep playing hard. He is a great example of how working hard and pushing your limits can help you reach greatness. It can be said that one day Dan will become an All-Star player all due to the passion he shows on and off the court.
The session continued in the pool where we played a version of handball and got the opportunity to go on the slide and diving boards. After a few games of Handball, we went to the slides and diving boards where Liel, Dan, and Eric showed us all how to have fun in the water. Special thanks to Sarah Hassan, one of our Coaches, for arranging this amazingly fun "Basketball in the Pool Day".

July 10th:
On our 2nd session we focused on passing and lay-ups. During Game-Time, passes were the focus on both teams, as instructed by the coaches. The player of the day went to Avi Levy from UTT. He worked hard through the drills and showed a lot of leadership qualities during Game-Time. He made it clear that he was never going to quit playing and he ran continuously. When his team scored he cheered and when his team lost the ball he helped on defence and encouraged his teammates. He displayed great teamwork and positivity.

July 3rd: Today was our first session. We gave out the J-HOOPS official Summer 2011 T-Shirts and finished off with some TLC Frozen Yogurt. We focused on dribbling and lay-ups. During Game-Time, Coaches asked their players to show confidence when dribbling the ball. The player of the day went to Shayne Bregman from UTT. He impressed all of us. Here's what happened; he caught the ball and was swarmed with a trap defence, he held on to the ball as long as he could but the defense was very physical, instead of getting angry and letting his emotions get the best of him, he worked harder and eventually stole the ball and went on a fast break to score an impressive lay-up. He showed that when you work hard and you don't give up good things can and will happen.
